AMPATH Workshop to Identify
Areas of Scientific Collaboration
between the US and the AMPATH Service Area

August 15-17, 2001
Florida International University
Koven's Conference Center at Biscayne Bay Campus
Miami, Florida

The main objective of the workshop is to discover the benefits of utilizing a high-performance research and education network, known as AMPATH. AMPATH is a project of Florida International University in collaboration with Global Crossing, in support of scientific research applications that either involve collaboration between U.S. and multi-national researchers or wholly run U.S. projects in the AMPATH service area.  AMPATH connects Research and Education networks in the service area of South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean to the Internet2 Abilene network and the STAR TAP . AMPATH's goal is to facilitate research collaboration in the AMPATH service area and the rest of the world to further advance U.S. science and education. This anticipated discovery is supported in several ways. On April 27, 2001, an AMPATH Request for Application Information was sent to researchers around the world.

The purpose of the request is to solicit high-performance network dependent application information from all potential AMPATH users, whether through membership in AMPATH, or the need / desire to collaborate with researchers and educators in the AMPATH service area (meaning our potential users could be anywhere in the world). It is anticipated that response to this request will help identify the universities and research centers in the AMPATH service area who require, or would take advantage of, high-performance connectivity to research institutions in the US and worldwide if it were available. Responses will also help to identify researchers that will be invited to the proposed AMPATH workshop, and we will attempt to coordinate joint presentations between collaborators in the U.S., Canada, the AMPATH service area, Europe and Asia/Pacific.

Major funding for this workshop was provided by the National Science Foundation's Division of Advanced Networking Infrastructure and Research.
