What is AMPATH?
Florida International University (FIU) has developed an international, high-performance research connection point in Miami, Florida, called AMPATH (AMericasPATH). AMPATH serves as the premiere interconnection point for network-enabled U.S.- Latin America and Caribbean science research and education. Through its exchange point facilities in Miami, Florida, high-bandwidth network services are available for U.S. and international research and education networks to extend participation to underrepresented groups in Latin America and the Caribbean. AMPATH works as a major research facility recognized by the U.S. National Science Foundation, supporting international e-science.
Why South Florida?
The mix of numbers of undersea fiber cables landing on Florida’s east coast and availability of a rich terrestrial fiber infrastructure is strategically positioned for a major international exchange point (IXP) for the research and education networks in South America, Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The AMPATH IXP in Miami offers connectivity to the Internet2 & ESnet high-performance research and education network and the StarLight IXP in Chicago. Since June 2001, the AMPATH project has connected multiple National Research and Education Networks in Central and Latin America.

Current Projects
AmLight ExP
Americas Lightpaths Express and Protect (AmLight ExP) project implements a hybrid network strategy that combines the use of optical spectrum (Express) and leased capacity (Protect), in order to build a reliable, leading-edge network infrastructure for research and education.
Vera C. Rubin Observatory
Florida International University’s Center for Internet Augmented Research and Assessment (CIARA) is pleased to announce AMLIGHT’s long-term support for a high-speed network, linking the NSF-funded Vera C. Rubin Observatory to the National Center for SuperComputing Applications (NCSA) and beyond through a sub-award from the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA).
AtlanticWave- SDX
AtlanticWave-SDX: a distributed experimental Software-Defined Exchange (SDX), supporting research, experimental deployments, prototyping and interoperability testing, on national and international scales.
AARCLight
Florida International University and AmLight consortium partners are planning, designing, and defining a strategy for high capacity connectivity research and education network connectivity between the US and West Africa called Americas Africa Research and eduCation Lightpaths (AARCLight).
