Argentina’s RETINA Now Connected to AMPATH and I2 Networks through the Global Crossing Infrastructure

Miami and Washington D.C. – December 18, 2001- Global Crossing Ltd. (NYSE: GX), Internet2 and Florida International University (FIU) are pleased to announce that as of November 28, 2001 Argentina’s academic research institutions - RETINA (RED TeleINformática Académia) is connected to AMPATH and the Internet2 Abilene high-performance research and education networks.. The donation of a DS3 (45 Mbps) of capacity is being provided by Global Crossing, which developed the program Americas Path (AMPATH) in conjunction with Florida International University, to help connect universities and research centers in Latin America and the Caribbean that are already using technology to advance education and development.

“Global Crossing is pleased to donate the capacity and equipment to RETINA to facilitate the free flow of information for institutions throughout Argentina,” said Luisa Cerar, vice president and managing director, Southern Cone, Global Crossing. “This capacity will level the playing field for academic research centers in our country and will enable the exchange of ideas and information, which is so critical to the social and economic development of Latin America.”

In addition to the donated capacity, RETINA will also receive other donated equipment and telecom space from Global Crossing in Buenos Aires. To date, Global Crossing has donated 10 45 Megabits per second (Mbps) DS3 circuits to FIU’s AMPATH project, enabling the interconnection of more than 250 universities and research organizations in Latin America and the Caribbean to the U.S. and non-U.S. National Research and Education Networks using Internet2’s Abliene network and STAR TAP.

Government officials in Argentina lauded the philanthropic initiative and pledged support for the continuing development of technologies that benefit all sectors.

"Argentina continues to be at the forefront of technology and education, supporting efforts by the public and private sector to provide scholars and researchers with the best tools to learn, communicate and succeed in today's world, " stated Henoch Aguiar, Argentina's Secretary of Communications. "I would like to personally extend my gratitude to Global Crossing for providing this valuable donation that will benefit many Argentines throughout the country for many years to come."

Other research institutions/universities that are involved in AMPATH are Rede Nacional de Ensino e Pesquisa Centro de Informações (RNP) in Brazil, Red Universitaria Nacional (REUNA) in Chile, La Secretaría Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación (SENACYT) in Panama, Red Academica de Centros de Investigacion y Universidades Nacionales (REACCUIN) in Venezuela, Corporacion Universitaria para el Desarrollo de Internet (CUDI) in Mexico, Centro De Investigacion De Las Telecommunications (CINTEL) in Colombia and Red Cientifica Peruana (RCP) in Peru.
